Mr Dan Digs Diana Ross “Brown Baby”

Start listening

We are proud to present the first edition of this new mix series dedicated to the great art of sampling. Every show, we will focus on one song that has been sampled multiple times over the years, playing what we think are the best cuts of the bunch. The goal is to witness the talent behind those producers/artists, and the way they flip the original track into something new and fresh. We also want to stay away from the usual James Brown or Bob James songs and try to find tunes most people are not aware have been heavily sampled.

We start things off with a great track from the queen, Diana Ross, titled “Medley: Brown Baby / Save The Children”, but we really put the emphasis on the first part. “Brown Baby” is actually a cover of a splendid song released in 1960 by Oscar Brown Jr. The soulful version from Miss Ross has been sampled multiple times by artists like Action Bronson (Falside), GURU, Real Live (K-Def), Deadbeats and more you can discover in the mix.

Which one is your favorite sample flip? Which artist created the best song? Do you know other tunes that have sampled “Brown Baby” that should have been included in this mix? Don’t be afraid to reach out!

Last but not least, we want to send a big shoutout and thank you to the people of www.whosampled.com, without their great website it would be almost impossible to create mixes like this one.
