#30thAnniversary – 3rd Bass “Derelicts of Dialect”

This is the second and final album from MC Serch, Pete Nice and DJ Richie Rich aka 3rd Bass, released June 18, 1991 via Def Jam – Columbia. Making it clear that they didn’t want to sellout and create a record for the mainstream market, they still found a way to have a hit record with “Pop Goes The Weasel”. Sounding a little bit out of place on this solid body of work, the gold single is directly attacking the pop-hip hop formula of Vanilla Ice (weirdly enough sampling Peter Gabriel’s mega hit “Sledgehammer” along the way!)

The production on the LP is mainly handled by Sam Sever of the short-lived group Downtown Science and the legendary Prince Paul. Some of the best moments come from the latter, like the excellent title track “Derelicts Of Dialect”. An array of dope MC’s are also featured on the project, with appearances from Chubb Rock, KMD and Nice & Smooth.
