#30thAnniversary – KMD “Mr. Hood”

It’s hard to believe both brothers who are responsible for this excellent body of work have left the planet. Most people are aware that we lost the great MF DOOM aka Zev Love X late 2020. His sibling and other member of KMD “DJ Subroc” sadly lost his life in 1993 after being hit by a car, just before their follow up album “Black Bastards” was supposed to emerge.

Rewind to 1991, after a nice feature on 3rd Bass “The Gas Face” and subsequently being signed to Elektra Records, thanks to Dante Ross, the Dumile brothers with new member Onyx the Birthstone Kid released the acclaimed but greatly overlooked album “Mr Hood”. Three singles came out over more than a year, starting with “Peachfuzz” at the end of 1990, followed up by “Who Me?” and the funky “Nitty Gritty” featuring Brand Nubian. The politically charged but often comical lyrics, some unusual samples and the fact that this project is the first from one of the most gifted MC’s of all time, makes this debut an essential for every rap fan.
