Our own Captain Planet has been on a roll over the last year: He released his debut album “Cookin’ Gumbo”, went on a long-ass European tour, and has been pumping out a steady stream of remixes for heavyweights like AM & Shawn Lee, The Pimps of Joytime, Ana Tijoux and more. Today we wanted to make you aware of his newest project: a very special cassette tape project entitled “Mystery Trip Vol. 1” which is out on Bastard Jazz now.
This instant classic draws inspiration from Madlib’s “Medicine Show” series: ripping obscure cuts from vinyl, then slicing and dicing with a hefty injection of original production and homegrown field recordings from his travels around the world. The result is a 45 minute long sonic journey, through Senegal, Jamaica, Ghana, Puerto Rico, Peru, Brazil, Italy, Korea, Guadeloupe, and Zimbabwe. Each limited-edition “Mystery Trip” Cassette tape comes with a free digital download of separated tracks/edits, along with the full digi-mix. As an added bonus, Captain Planet is hand-painting an exclusive batch of Walkmen, which will be available as a premium pack with the tape at the Bastard Jazz store.
The good people over at Turntablelab are getting in on the Mystery Trip fever as well. They opened a special contest to win a Captain Planet hand-painted vintage 1982 Panasonic RX-5110 Boombox created specially for the “Mystery Trip” release. Listen to the Soundcloud stream above , identify the original artist & track names for as many of the tracks in the mix as possible, and email mysterytrip@bastardjazz.com with your list. The person with the most correct answers wins. 1 Entry per person. Deadline to to enter is November 8th, 2012. Winners will be announced November 12th, 2012.
