Weekly Digest 15 – cover

drake

Not a big fan of Drake, but his influence on Rap/Pop music can hardly be denied. So when he’s dropping a first song of his upcoming album, it’s all over the news and in everyones ears. I let Drake explain the story…

My good friends,It has truly been too long. I assume you’re all keeping well and making the most of this year that has been given to us. Today is the day to begin sharing my newest work with you. This is the first single off of my upcoming album. I feel sometimes that people don’t have enough information about my beginnings and therefore they make up a life story for me that isn’t consistent with actual events. My family and my second family (consisting of the best friends anybody could ever have) all struggled and worked extremely hard to make all this happen. I did not buy my way into this spot and it was the furthest thing from easy to achieve. I am proud of every part of my past and I’m excited for this song to find a place in your life as well. I didn’t feel I needed any interviews or radio or press to launch this song. It felt right to come back to the site that I started on and release it to the people that started here with me. Judging by this post, the tour that we’ve been planning, the conversations about new songs and album artwork… I think it’s safe to say we’re back together again. Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

We chatted with Seasick Mama not that long ago about her excellent Frank Ocean cover. So it was good timing to check in with last week, because she just released her brand spanking new video “Quit Your Job”. The song is off her debut EP “Dead Like Money” – out February 19th, 2013.

We’re going completely left-field for this one, so stay with us. Dr Octagon aka Dr Doom aka Black Elvis aka Kool Keith worked with one of LA’s beat scene’s finest producers, TOKiMONSTA.The collaboration “The Force“ leaked a while ago, but now it comes as a pretty package with an animated video. Enjoy!

Toronto based band The Battle of Santiago fuses Afro-cuban, dub, afrobeat, electronic, jazz, and Latin into a powerful instrumental sound – and the proof is their new album, Followed By Thousands (Out March 5, 2013). It is “a record that helps define our sound and our direction,” notes group founder Group founder Michael Owen. It features new compositions alongside inventive remixes of earlier material.

la-yegros

Our boy Captain Planet recently remixed La Yegros – one of the brightest new talents on South America’s freshest record label – ZZK. I was super happy to have the opportunity to remix. He flipped this beautiful rootsy cumbia tune into an early 90’s dancehall style for reggae heads. The whole EP is now available worldwide on iTunes.

Dancing to dubstep is way past breaking into the mainstream. You’ve seen it on Youtube, (Your Country) Got Talent, etc, etc… Still, this video is worth mentioning, since Black Swan choreographer Benjamin Millepied teamed up with Canadian production duo Zeds Dead in this wavy reinterpretation of Michael Jackson’s classic “Thriller” video.

Actually this is the first part in a six-part video project presented by Belvedere Vodka. pairing musicians with non-traditional music video directors – exploring the way that music videos are made today. Get the music on Beatport or iTunes.

This set was curated and inspired by J Dilla’s constant integration of countless genres and relentless output. All unfinished tracks. Raw. Uncut. Mostly with friends – made in 1 hour or less. Hope you enjoy. Love you Jay Dee. Eternal thanks and respect.

You know, I had a feeling Shigeto had something in the works to celebrate J Dilla‘s birthday after he posted last night that he had something special brewing. Sure enough, the drummer/producer has delivered the Beats 4 Dilla project, which compiles a series of collaborations he crafted with the likes of Skywlkr, Mux Mool, Devonwho, and Josef Deas. The nine tunes on here run the gamut from nighttime-ready head-nodders to brash throat-punchers, with the latter applying especially to Shigeto’s second cut with Skywlkr.

From Shigeto himself:

This was curated & inspired by Dilla’s effortless, quality controlled, ever so versatile and relentless output.

Flatbush Zombies ended their 2012 with their single “MRAZ” – now we get to have a look at the official video, where the trio of emcees is spitting their rhymes in their home studio with the addition of some trippy edited effects. Expect the track to appear on their forthcoming Better Off DEAD mixtape, set to release soon.
