#30thAnniversary – Del the Funky Homosapien “No Need for Alarm”
On the follow up to the well received “I Wish My Brother George Was Here“, Del the Funky Homosapien left the g-funk sound behind to go in a more experimental east coast direction. It was a bold move considering that the west coast was at the top of the Hip Hop world at the time, but it was a good indication where Del and the whole Hieroglyphics crew we’re heading for the future (Souls of Mischief’s debut album “’93 ’til Infinity” gave us another good example a couple of months earlier). Definitely less accessible, “No Need for Alarm” is still an interesting LP, full of great battle raps and in-house dope productions from the Hiero family. It’s no surprise that the album didn’t sell well, and as a result, it was Del’s last album for Elektra Records. But it opened the gate for a long independent career where he was able to push the limits of music, far from the boundaries of the big record label.
