This might be the debut album from Snoop Dogg, but it’s definitely not an introduction to the renowned west coast emcee. After appearing on half of the tracks from Dr Dre’s classic “The Chronic” and almost stealing the show, the anticipation for his solo project was sky high to say the least. “Doggystyle” didn’t disappoint, it feels like a needed sequel from Dre’s first LP, with the same g-funk sound people were craving for in 1993. It was, of course, a success. The album debuted #1 on the charts with close to a million copies sold in the first week. Like on Dre’s previous magnum opus, the features come from the talented in-house Death Row click, with dope verses from the likes of The Lady of Rage, The D.O.C., Tha Dogg Pound, RBX or Nate Dogg. But no one can beat the smooth flow and laidback energy of the main character. Snoop proved with this release that he was a superstar, on the way to becoming one of the most well known figures on the planet.
With the videos, remixes but mostly the live performances and interviews in playlists below, you can really catch the energy and charisma Snoop had from the beginning of his career. You can also dig in the samples used by Dr. Dre to create that masterpiece on www.whosampled.com and listen to an amazing mix by DJ Matman put together for Wax Poetics to celebrate the 25th Anniversary.
