Not many groups in Hip Hop history find the way to crossover in the pop charts while keeping their street credibility. That’s exactly what “Naughty By Nature” managed to do on their first eponymous album on Tommy Boy Records (they previously released a project under the name “The New Style” in 1989), thanks especially to the mega hit single “O.P.P.”. The LP is far from a one hit wonder thing, with other legendary tracks like “Uptown Anthem” (originally released on the “Juice” soundtrack) or “Guard Your Grill” included in this 13 track effort. Producer/DJ Kay Gee and hypeman/MC Vin Rock made a name for themselves with this record, but it’s the man who takes care of most of the vocals who really came out as a genius, MC extraordinaire “Treach”. Too often forgotten in the list of best rappers ever, his lyrical dexterity and incredible penship are obvious throughout the album.
So if you only remember the big singles, or if you’re a fanatic of 90’s east coast rap music, you need to dive back into this record right now!
