When it was time for Lord Finesse to drop “Return of the Funky Man”, the follow up to the well received “Funky Technician” with DJ Mike Smooth, he was already well known for his impressive wordplay and punchlines. What was new this time around is the contribution he made on the beat side, getting production credit on six tracks of the LP. That was the beginning of a storied career as a beatmaker, on his D.I.T.C. crew projects, but also for legends like Notorious B.I.G and Dr. Dre. One of the important tracks related to this album can be found on the b-side of the “Party Over Here” 12 inch single. The excellent “Yes You May (Funk Flow Mix)” features the first verse on wax from one of the most gifted emcees of all-time, Big L. We can’t forget to mention the incredible apparition of the underrated lyrical mastermind Percee P on the original “Yes You May”, proving that he should have been considered a top emcee in the early 90’s.
