In an era where 99% of the Hip Hop music coming from the west coast was about shooting people and keeping it gangsta, The Pharcyde was a breath of fresh air. Even if most subjects they tackled across the LP are light-hearted, the message is delivered so well, it’s still captivating. Slimkid3, Imani, Bootie Brown and Fatlip all have their own style of flow but perfectly complement each other, from almost singing to almost screaming! One of the big reasons why this album is an absolute classic is the thick jazzy sound of in-house producer J-Swift, with production on the same level as the greatests of that era like Q-Tip and Pete Rock. Substance abuse sadly prevented him from having the career he was destined to have, but this record demonstrates his incredible potential. The biggest hit that propelled the project to another level is the legendary “Passin’ Me By”, a song crossing over to alternative stations and appearing in your favorite skateboarding video.
