Akin to floating in space, or on a magic carpet ride, the new single by Illa J, titled, ‘Universe’ is truly a captivating song. It is the second single off of his upcoming album due out in the fall on Bastard Jazz.
Once again, we find Illa J both rapping and singing. His vocals are dripping with soul and it is very apparent that he’s been working hard at music, as the young spitter’s wordplay is also very sophisticated yet playful.
The Vancouver production duo, Potatohead People, who have taken on executive-producing Illa’s album, have also delivered a stellar backdrop for the Detroit native on this cut. Their production is groovy, reminiscent of a ‘70s roller-skating rink type song, but their beat maintains an ethereal quality often found in their work. Overall, the track is fun, lighthearted, and youthful, but also maintains that retro flavor. Check it out and be on the lookout for the music video next week!
