Not many members of the electronic music community can say they have been collaborating and releasing music together for more than 30 years, but Underworld can. Original members Karl Hyde and Rick Smith did something right when they came together in the late 80s (after already having worked together with bands like Kraftwerk earlier on). In 1995, with the release of the band’s third album, dubnobasswithmyheadman, came a new style and sound, courtesy of its newest member, DJ Darren Emerson. The album received critical acclaim and was touted as the “most important album since The Stone Roses” by Melody Maker, and John Bush from Allmusic referred to Underworld as a “multi-genre group.” In 2006, Underworld were the first band to perform a live simulcast, hosted by Apple, from Berlin, and in 2009, they conducted the world’s first free live audio-visual broadcast to the iPhone at The Fox Oakland Theater. Truly groundbreaking accomplishments.
Now, twenty years later, dubnobasswithmyheadman is the first of all Underworld’s studio albums to get a makeover. It has been re-mastered and reissued, and all of the band’s studio albums are set to receive the same treatment over the next few years. The album was meticulously worked and overworked at the famous Abbey Road studios in London and is available for purchase today, October 6, from Underworld’s online shop. And in conjunction with its release, a live performance by the band at the Royal Festival Hall will take place on October 11 and will offer fans the opportunity the see them play the album in its entirety for the first time.
