#30thAnniversary – Kool Moe Dee ”Funke Funke Wisdom”
The MC from the legendary Treacherous Three was stepping hard into the nineties with his fourth solo album. The production is mostly handled by his longtime collaborator Teddy Riley who was peaking at the time with his New Jack Swing sound, but we’re miles away from a bubble gum R&B sounding project! The beats are hitting hard with loads of samples from James Brown, Kool & The Gang, Ohio Players and Sly Stone amongst others and it features Steve Arrington of Slave. Kool Moe Dee flow is very commanding and aggressive at some points, especially on “Death Blow”, a diss track aimed at LL Cool J. The video of this is actually a parody of “Mama Said Knock You Out”. Both of them had beef since the mid eighties, when LL claimed to be “rap’s new grandmaster” and Kool Moe Dee felt like he was stealing his style while also disrespecting the pioneers of the movement. If you’re not familiar with this album, take a listen, you’ll be surprised of it’s perfectly balanced urban feel!
