The relation between basketball and Hip Hop has always been really strong, but most of the time, when an NBA player tried to grab a mic, the result was embarrassing at best. This album from Shaquille O’Neal might be the exception, an underrated body of work released in the last quarter of 1993 through Jive Records. Shaq is far from being the best emcee around, but he still can hold his own, while the production from top notch beatmakers like Erick Sermon, K-Cut, Def Jef & Ali Shaheed Muhammad really helps keep things interesting. Fans of ATCQ can also find two dope features from Phife Dawg, the other guest appearances coming from the aforementioned Def Jef and Fu-Schnickens. Despite many bad reviews at the time, Shaq Diesel managed to go platinum in less than a year, making it one of the most successful Hip Hop releases of ’93.
