For the better part of the 80’s, the name “Run DMC” was the most influential in Hip Hop culture. They were the first real stars of the genre but also the first that had the difficult task of trying to stay relevant as the years went by. After an unsuccessful attempt to please the listeners of the New Jack swing era with “Back from Hell”, Run, DMC and Jam Master Jay tried a new approach for “Down with the King”. Wearing black hoodies and Timberland boots, the crew went for a darker look and a grimier sound, recruiting some of the best artists of the early 90’s to help them put the LP together, like Pete Rock, Q-Tip, EPMD, Naughty by Nature, or the Bomb Squad. The result is a much more appreciable album, surely not as innovative as the first three records, but still a great way to cement their legacy in the 90’s.
