#30thAnniversary – MC Lyte “Act Like You Know”

On her third album for First Priority Music / Atlantic Records “Act Like You Know”, MC Lyte took another route and changed her sound, trying to please a bigger audience. A big chunk of the LP leans into R&B and New Jack Swing Territories, the most prominent style on the airwaves in 1991. That doesn’t mean Lyte was selling out or the record is bad, but some fans and critics were surprised by the move and gave the project mixed reviews. Lyrically, MC Lyte was still on point, with rhymes about drug addiction, the AIDS epidemic or relationship challenges. On the beat side, you can still find some more hardcore productions from the 45 King and Audio Two, especially on the second part of the album, on tracks like “Big Bad Sister” and “Kamikaze”.
