For the fourth album and follow up to the excellent “Peaceful Journey“, Heavy D enlisted Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Tony Dofat and Jesse West as beatmakers and delivered the most street oriented project of his discography. Always respected by his peers for his abilities on the mic, Heavy D was known for his excursion into pop territories, making sure he could please the ladies and reach a wider audience, while always including a couple of tracks with a street edge on each project. For “Blue Funk”, it’s the opposite, most of the tracks have harder beats and the subjects tackled vary a little bit more, even if a single like “Truthful” is a reminder of the Heavyweight lover’s usual vibe. The result is an LP that had a lackluster reception from critics, but turned out to be the favorite one for most Hip Hop heads. We finish with a little word on the album closer titled “A Buncha N*****”, a classic that needs to be mentioned into the list of best posse cut of all time, with verses from GURU, 3rd Eye, The Notorious B.I.G., Busta Rhymes & Rob-O.
