#30thAnniversary – Gravediggaz “6 Feet Deep”

It was a bit unexpected when former Tommy Boy Records artists Prince Paul (producer for Stetsasonic and De La Soul), RZA (of Wu-Tang Clan), Frukwan (Stetsasonic), and Poetic came together to release an album as Gravediggaz in 1994. While Paul’s career had slowed somewhat, RZA was riding high on the success of “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” with his Staten Island crew. Nevertheless, they went ahead and recorded the excellent 6 Feet Deep for the UK-based Gee Street Records. Dark loops and incredibly sinister, disturbing lyrics dominate the album, earning it recognition as one of the pioneering projects in horrorcore hip-hop (if that’s even a genre). Regardless, the result is a classic, on par with the first wave of legendary Wu-Tang Clan albums.
