When you talk about grimy NYC Hip Hop, you need to have “Enta da Stage” at the top of that list. The first album from 5Ft. Excellerator, Buckshot Shorty and DJ Evil Dee aka Black Moon didn’t have the success of “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” or “Illmatic” commercially, but can easily be mentioned in the same sentence as those classics. The filthy boom bap productions of Evil Dee and his brother Mr Walt, known as Da Beatminerz, combined with the smooth but menacing flow of Buckshot is an impeccable amalgam. It’s an all killer, no filler LP, but even the remixes are as good, if not better, than the album cut. The best example is the remix of “Buck Em Down”, where The Beatminerz re-flipped the Donald Byrd “Wind Parade” sample, giving even more swing to the beat than on the original, creating the perfect backdrop for Buckshot to switch his flow into a melodic lyrical barrage. Undoubtedly one of the best Hip Hop tracks ever created.
