Hidden Gems (July 2014)

One of our favourites is Arizona-based emcee/producer Glad2Mecha is back with another album. Think Pete Rock, Premier, etc – the golden sound of the 90s!

Sundazed is the 1st single off Allen Poe‘s new LP “How Gardens Grow” set to release this fall. This track captures two stories of a summer love, as Louisville MC Jalin Roze adds the guest verse. DJ Calcutta adds cuts and LA based producer Manifest Beats provides the production.

Melting Pot Music out of Germany signed FloFilz. The Aachen-based producer is a proud disciple of the Low End Theory school of beats (Tribe, not LA). Get familiar with him already and check his new beat “Jazzchains”, which he put on Soundcloud earlier this week.

Homeboy Sandman‘s forthcoming album, Hallways, will hit the internet Sep. 2, and the first taster is quite a tease indeed. America, The Beautiful, the inaugural single preluding Sandman’s second Stones Throw full length, is produced by none other than Jonwayne. Jonwayne’s beat bounces to its jazzy bass breaks, which provide the basement foundation for a thick, sample-laden top layer.

Backward Books, is Azizi Gibson‘s latest output – a solid 9 track EP. If you haven’t heard of him, the 22 year old met Flying Lotus at the gym and ended up getting signed to Brainfeeder – how’s that for a story?

Not your typical Austinite, Read Richarts aims to ensure that his hometown is no longer overshadowed by its sister cities Houston & Dallas with his upcoming “Irrelevant” project, which will be available as a free download on August 6.

The legendary DJ/Producer Pete Rock recently made an appearance on The Combat Jack show. DJ BenHameen put together a fantastic seventy plus minute mix titled The Pete Rock Projects. The mix includes all of Pete Rock’s classic songs, guest appearances and remixes from his illustrious career, which now spans over 20 years in hip-hop.

Emcee/Visionary John Robinson, Jazz Enthusiast/Radio DJ, Thomas Simmons and Jazz Vocalist, T.C. III ride the 4 train to the last stop in the Bronx and document the journey of a visit to Woodlawn Cemetery – the final resting place of legendary Jazz Masters Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins, Jackie McLean, Max Roach, Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton and more. Their mission to this National Historic Landmark serves up an educational experience for classic Jazz lovers all the way to Hip-Hop crate-diggers. It’s title: Last Stop on the 4 Train
